Scotland’s Migration Service, which offers people who have moved to Scotland access to specialist advice, has recently expanded its services to offer greater support for those seeking to come to Scotland from abroad.
Local MSP Clare Adamson says the service can help to draw talent, business and investment toward Motherwell and Wishaw.
Originally launched in March 2024 to support new immigrants, international investors and Scottish businesses, the service is now expanding to support those who have a job offer or close family in Scotland or wish to stay here once their studies have ended.
It is hoped that the scheme will help to reduce labour shortages caused by Brexit, as well as addressing Scotland’s demographic challenges, with research showing Scotland is the only UK nation predicted to see a decline in population within the next ten years.
Ms Adamson, SNP MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw said:
“Scotland’s Migration Service is helping to bring talent and investment from around the world to Scotland. Scotland is an inclusive and welcoming country, and the benefits – and necessities – of inward migration are not talked about enough.
“We need to confront the realities of our demographics. We have an ageing population and we are set to experience population decline over the next decade.
“That presents real challenges for our labour market and public services. We rely on inward migration to support our future growth, economic stability, and to enhance our communities.
“Fewer working-age taxpayers coupled with higher demand for public services like the NHS and social care is not in anyone’s interest.
“That is why we need action like Scotland’s Migration Service to support people to live and work in Scotland.
“With the UK Government refusing to introduce a distinct Scottish visa to meet our unique immigration needs, I am glad the SNP Government has taken steps to support people to invest, establish businesses, and make their homes in Motherwell and Wishaw and throughout Scotland.”
