LABOUR POLICY A THREAT TO SCOTLAND’S ECONOMY AND PUBLIC SERVICES
Clare Adamson MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw has hit out at Labour’s “reckless and damaging” migration proposals, warning that the plans would be devastating for local NHS and care services and risk harming the Scottish economy.
The SNP MSP pointed out that Scotland has different demographic needs and taking a one-size fits all approach across 4 UK nations is unworkable.
Ms Adamson joined calls from the care sector and other industries for Keir Starmer to urgently abandon his proposed restrictions on international recruitment, which would block access to much needed overseas workers in key sectors like health and social care.
Recent remarks from Scottish Care and UNISON have highlighted the deepening workforce crisis in care, and the risk of collapse if international recruitment is restricted further.
Ms Adamson, MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw, said:
“Labour have shown their true colours. Keir Starmer’s comments on immigration were despicable. Turning people against one another to cover his own failures does not represent change; we became used to that under the Tories.
“Migration brings immense economic, social, and cultural benefits. The people who have made their home in Scotland are a valued part of our society.
“Labour’s plans are a direct threat to our NHS and care services in Lanarkshire. Like other communities across Scotland, dedicated international workers are integral to keep our hospitals, care homes and community services running.
“We have an ageing population and, bluntly, we need inward migration to boost the economy and broaden the tax base as well as enriching our culture.
“Pandering to anti-immigrant sentiment and slamming the door shut on international recruitment hurts our public services, threatens jobs, economic growth, and our ability to care for the most vulnerable in our community.
“Keir Starmer and Labour don’t care about Scotland. We are always an afterthought. That is why they are focused on chasing Reform in England rather than protecting Scotland’s interests. And Anas Sarwar, who promised to stand up to Starmer, is nowhere to be seen.
“Labour have broken promise after promise. They kept the two child cap; they slashed the winter fuel payment; energy bills have soared; they betrayed the WASPI women; they abandoned Grangemouth; and they are cutting critical financial support for sick and disabled people.
“This latest intervention from Keir Starmer shows why Scotland needs to be an independent nation. We have unique population and workforce needs; shoehorning more ill-conceived Westminster policy will not work for Scotland’s communities.
“Migrants are not some homogenous blob to be demonised and feared. They are our friends, neighbours, and loved ones with individual hopes and dreams.
“People are welcome in Scotland. A real leader would make that point instead of rolling over to Farage style populism. That is why I am grateful John Swinney is leading an SNP Government which will always stand up for Scotland and all of its people.
“Scotland desperately needs powers over immigration to put an end to these reckless and damaging policies inflicted by Westminster.”
