Clare Adamson MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw is pushing for improved outcomes for people affected by breast cancer.
The National Cancer Medicines Advisory Group Council issued new advice supporting the use of anastrozole, raloxifene and tamoxifen for the primary prevention of breast cancer.
In a question to Neil Gray, Cabinet Secretary for Health, Ms Adamson asked what steps have been taken to establish the necessary NHS pathway to ensure these medicines are readily available for people who choose these risk-reducing treatment options.
Ms Adamson said:
“It was a privilege to host Breast Cancer Now, a leading charity, in the Scottish Parliament as part of their annual Wear It Pink initiative.
“It was a bittersweet occasion as the testimony from the campaigners who have lost friends and loved ones, or are contending with breast cancer themselves, is difficult to hear.
“But the initiative is also about spreading joy while raising awareness and ensuring that people feel supported.
“With new advice issued on the use of primary prevention medicines, it is critical that there is a clear pathway for people who choose these treatment options.
“It is heartening to hear that the Scottish Government has already started conversations on a national NHS pathway.
“And I would urge anyone who is worried about new symptoms to speak to your GP and use the support channels offered by charities like Breast Cancer Now. Regular checks are easy to do and will mean you can detect any issues early.”
Breast Cancer Now offers free support online at breastcancernow.org/support-for-you/ask-our-nurses/ or by calling their free helpline on 0808 800 6000. You should always talk to your own medical professional about any concerns.
