ADAMSON WELCOMES £890 MILLION INVESTMENT IN LOCAL SERVICES

Clare Adamson MSP has highlighted the record funding going to North Lanarkshire after the Scottish Budget was passed at Holyrood this week, providing a £1 billion increase in funding to local authorities.

North Lanarkshire is set to receive funding of £890.2 million for 2025/26 – an increase of £58.7 million on the previous year.

This increases funding for local priorities, teachers and additional support for learning and to tackle the climate emergency. It also facilitates pay increases agreed for our teachers, social care workers, refuse collectors and more.

Ms Adamson, MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw, said:

“Alongside record investment in our NHS, 8000 new affordable homes, and lower income tax for most Scots compared to the rest of the UK, this year’s Scottish Budget provides funding for local authorities which will help deliver the services people rely on and ensure our community gets the investment it needs.

“After over a decade of Westminster austerity and now a Labour tax hike which is set to cost councils £100 million, the SNP Government is delivering record funding for local authorities.

“Under the SNP, we are not only investing in areas like North Lanarkshire but we are mitigating the impact of Westminster decisions, to the tune of £144 million for the National Insurance hike alone.

“It is a shame that the Tories and Labour joined together in failing to back these transformative policies but the SNP is delivering for Scots.  I was proud to vote for this budget and that Parliament supported this significant investment in local authorities.”

The Budget will deliver:

  • A record £21.7 billion in health and social care services, including almost £200 million to cut waiting times and help reduce delayed discharge

  • £7 billion on infrastructure investment, including 8,000 new affordable homes

  • £6.9 billion in social security, expected to support around two million people in 2025-26

  • The restoration of winter fuel payments for pensioners - after Labour scrapped them across the UK.

  • Effectively ending Labour’s cruel two-child benefit cap next year

  • Additional investment for Grangemouth and its workforce to secure a just transition.

  • Lower income tax for most Scots compared to the rest of the UK.

  • The most generous rates relief programme anywhere in the UK.

  • Increased £34 million investment in Scotland’s culture sector
