SNP ACTION KEEPING BILLS AS LOW AS POSSIBLE IN MOTHERWELL AND WISHAW

NEW FIGURES SHOW LWER TAXES AND BILLS IN SCOTLAND UNDER THE SNP

Clare Adamson MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw has highlighted figures showing Scottish Government action to keep bills as low as possible and help people with the cost of living in Scotland.

The SNP MSP has blasted Labour inaction as energy bills soar and the UK Government’s tax on jobs bites.

The majority of Scots pay less income tax than they would if they lived in England, because of a more progressive tax system put in place by the SNP Scottish Government.

Thanks to choices made by the SNP, Scots enjoy the highest levels of public services in the UK - with Scottish Government investment into free tuition, free prescriptions, free eye tests, free bus passes for the under 22s and over 60s, among many other additional services.

New figures have also shown that Scottish council tax bills will remain lower on average than in England in 2025/26 – with the average Scottish Band D property paying £737 a year less than their English counterparts.

Water bills are also on average £113 a year lower in Scotland than they are in England, as Scottish Water remains in public ownership.

Ms Adamson said:

“I know people are feeling the strain just now with financial pressures piling up.

“Labour promised to cut energy bills by £300, but instead they have gone up by nearly £300 since they came to power.

“We will do what we can to shield Scots from the worst impacts. SNP policy means that a majority of Scots pay less income tax, lower average council tax, and lower water bills than they would if they lived in England.

“Scots benefit from SNP policy choices through investment in free tuition fees, free prescriptions, and free bus travel for under-22s and over 60s. With lower bills than elsewhere than in the UK, the SNP is protecting Scots’ pockets during a cost-of-living crisis.

“But with most of the economic powers still at Westminster, we need to see some action from Labour.  Instead, we just get a long list of broken promises.  We want to go further and faster and that’s why I advocate for full independence for Scotland.

“Energy bills, the winter fuel payment, the WASPI women, Grangemouth, national insurances hikes, staggering PFI costs and appalling cuts to social security.  Broken Labour promises which are pushing people into poverty and damaging our public services.

“Labour has shown why they cannot be trusted.  The SNP will always fight for Scotland’s interests and we will work to protect Scottish taxpayers and help people with the cost of living.”

Scottish Taxpayers pay less income tax than the rest of the UK:

Lower Council Tax Bills:

Scottish average Band D: £1,543 (As reported by the Local Authorities on the statistical return Council Tax Assumptions 2025)
