LABOUR MSPs JOIN TORIES AND FAIL TO BACK FUNDING FOR IMPROVEMENTS IN MOTHERWELL AND WISHAW
The SNP Government’s Scottish Budget for 2025/26 has passed its final stage in the Scottish Parliament – delivering real progress for Motherwell and Wishaw local MSP Clare Adamson has said.
The Budget will deliver:
A record £21.7 billion in health and social care services, including almost £200 million to cut waiting times and help reduce delayed discharge
£7 billion on infrastructure investment, including 8,000 new affordable homes
£6.9 billion in social security, expected to support around two million people in 2025-26
The restoration of winter fuel payments for pensioners - after Labour scrapped them across the UK.
Effectively ending Labour’s cruel two-child benefit cap next year
Additional investment for Grangemouth and its workforce to secure a just transition.
Lower income tax for most Scots compared to the rest of the UK.
The most generous rates relief programme anywhere in the UK.
Increased £34 million investment in Scotland’s culture sector
However – despite the Labour Party in Scotland previously stating it supported many of the measures in the budget, North Lanarkshire Labour MSPs failed to back it alongside the Tories - instead choosing to abstain.
Ms Adamson, MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw, said: “John Swinney's first Budget as First Minister has been passed in the Scottish Parliament and it will deliver progress on Scotland’s priorities.
“The Budget sees record investment in the NHS, the restoration of winter fuel payments for pensioners and scraps the cruel two-child benefit cap. All of this is being done through the fairest tax system in the UK which sees most people pay less tax in Scotland than in the rest of the UK.
“Other parties worked constructively with the SNP to achieve this Budget. The Labour Party - along with the Tories – shamefully failed to support investment in the NHS, tackling child poverty, new affordable housing, and securing a future for Grangemouth.
“Anas Sarwar sits on his hands waiting for his orders from London. Labour is unwilling and unable to stand up for Scotland.
“Meanwhile, under John Swinney’s leadership, the SNP is taking action to deliver on the priorities of the people we serve."
