SCOTLAND STANDS WITH UKRAINE

clareadamsonmsp

Clare Adamson MSP has urged the international community to stand in solidarity with Ukraine.

Holyrood held a debate marking three years since Putin’s regime invaded Ukraine, leading to the destruction of infrastructure, horrendous bloodshed, and mass displacement of Ukrainian people.

Ms Adamson commended the enduring resilience of the Ukrainian people in the face of Putin’s brutality.

The MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw reflected upon comments by Andrii Madzianovskyi, the consul of Ukraine in Scotland, at last week’s session of the Constitution, Europe, External Affairs, and Culture Committee.

Consul Madzianovskyi said Ukraine’s requests for support from the UK is in three key areas – weaponry, sanctions on Russia, and diplomacy.

Mr Madzianovskyi was effusive in his gratitude for Scotland’s support at the Committee.

“Generosity, hospitality, compassion and boundless optimism are the synonyms with which the Scots are associated in Ukrainian society.

“Our country greatly appreciates such humanity and has repeatedly expressed its gratitude to Scotland for making life easier for Ukrainian refugees. That the Scottish supersponsorship programme is one of the best in Europe confirms what I have said.”

Ms Adamson, MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw said:

“We did not want to mark this anniversary.  It is three years since Putin’s regime violated the most basic humanitarian and democratic norms.

“Ukraine’s people have shown lasting resilience and bravery against the most unconscionable aggression. Ukrainian lives and livelihoods have been destroyed by Russia’s assault.

“The international community must be resolute in our defence of democracy, human rights, and the sovereignty of Ukraine and its people.

“The Scottish Government’s Super Sponsor Scheme has provided a vital pathway to sanctuary for tens of thousands of people.

“Ukrainians in my constituency of Motherwell and Wishaw, have become a part of the community.

“I want Ukrainian families to know they will always be welcome here.  But I know they yearn for peace; they want to go home.

“Ukrainians—and all those fleeing conflict—need our continued compassion and support.

“Ukraine stands tall and we must stand with them.”
