Clare Adamson MSP has hailed the transformative impact of SNP policies as new figures show 8,155,430 bus journeys were made by under 22s in North Lanarkshire since the SNP Government introduced the policy three years ago.

Earlier this week it was revealed that over 200 million free bus journeys had been made by young people across Scotland. The scheme is part of efforts to eradicate child poverty, tackle the climate emergency and grow the economy by providing accessible travel for education, employment and leisure.

Through the 2025-26 Budget, the Scottish Government will provide £409 million for concessionary bus travel, providing access to free bus travel for almost 2.3 million people.

Ms Adamson, MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw, said:

“Eradicating child poverty is the number one priority of John Swinney’s SNP Government.  Accessible public transport is part of meeting that priority alongside unique Scottish policies like the Scottish Child Payment.

“With over 200 million journeys now made across Scotland, this SNP policy is saving young people and their families significant amounts of money and enabling young people to take on new opportunities in education and employment without worrying about the cost of their bus travel.

“This policy is about improving the lives of young people in Motherwell and Wishaw, linking communities and working to address the climate crisis by encouraging people to use public transport.

“The SNP, under John Swinney, is delivering on Scotland’s priorities and delivering for North Lanarkshire’s young people.”

The Scottish Government supports several concessionary travel schemes to make it easier and cheaper for people in Scotland.

You can save money on public transport with the National Entitlement Card (NEC). The card gives holders free bus travel in Scotland and, through the Strathclyde Concessionary Travel Scheme, reduced fares on trains and Subway in the Strathclyde area.

Visit transport.gov.scot/concessionary-travel/ to find out more about cheaper travel schemes for under 22s, people aged 60 or over, and disabled people.

If you live in North Lanarkshire, and meet certain eligibility criteria, you can apply for a National Entitlement Card online at getyournec.scot or phone SPT on 0141 333 3211 if you need help with your application.
