Clare Adamson MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw hosted the latest meeting of the Community Action Network
The Community Action Network (CAN) is an initiative which brings together charities, civil society groups, churches, community organisations, and campaigners with a shared commitment to tackling poverty and supporting people across North Lanarkshire.
Ms Adamson led the first meeting of the Community Action Network at the Dalziel Building in Motherwell to coincide with the beginning of Challenge Poverty Week 2024.
The Group allows members to share their expertise, raise awareness of different issues facing their community, and work collaboratively to support people in Motherwell and Wishaw and across Lanarkshire.
The latest meeting had over 50 attendees with presentations from: North Lanarkshire Disability Forum, Take Ctrl, B&Q, Turning Point, GamCare and Scottish Gas Networks.
Ms Adamson, SNP MSP and Chair of Community Action Network, said:
“We want to improve things for people in Motherwell and Wishaw and we have made some brilliant connections since starting the Community Action Network.
“I was delighted to see some positive action that has been taken by members since the last meeting and there is growing familiarity between different groups. That is what this forum is for – linking up people with a shared interest in helping our community, raising awareness of different projects, and advocating for change.
“Demand to take part in CAN is growing and we have a bit of a waitlist for contributions now!
“Some key issues highlighted were disability rights, problematic substance use, gambling addiction, gas safety and the priority services register, as well as support available for organisations in the community with ongoing refurbishment or DIY projects.
“Thank you to the wonderful New College Lanarkshire for hosting CAN in their brand-new Wellbeing Academy. The next meeting will take place on 28th July and we are always happy to welcome new members.
“I hope that by highlighting some of the brilliant support projects available throughout Motherwell and Wishaw, that people can find help when it’s needed or perhaps get involved with helping our community.”
