November 11th is Armistice Day.
Armistice Day commemorates the agreement to end the fighting of the First World War as a prelude to peace negotiations, which began at 11am on 11 November 1918.
Armistice Day is marked annually with a Two Minute Silence at 11am on the 11th day of the 11th month.
Clare Adamson MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw attended Remembrance services at Belhaven Park in Wishaw and Duchess Park in Motherwell.
Ms Adamson said:
“It was a profound honour to lay a wreath in remembrance; a small token to commemorate the people who gave up everything for us.
“This day is about remembering and reflecting upon the people who died; prisoners of war who endured unimaginable inhumanity; civilians who suffered under the ravages of conflict; and veterans who need our support today.
“Armistice Day marks the agreement to end the fighting of the First World War. It began peace negotiations and it is in that spirit that we can reflect today.
“Our world remains plagued by war and people continue to suffer. Such horrors are not confined to our history. We must resolve to bring about lasting peace so that no one is forced to give up their life or livelihood in the name of conflict.
“What could be a more fitting tribute to those who gave their lives in defence of humanity’s freedoms, than ensuring we can exercise those freedoms in peace today?
“I want to give a heartfelt thank you to military veterans past and present for their sacrifices.
“At the eleventh hour on the eleventh day of the eleventh month – we will remember them.”
