Clare Adamson MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw has thrown her support behind the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund’s (SCIAF) annual WEE BOX appeal, which raises vital funds for its life-changing work in Africa, Asia and Latin America.
Lent is 40 days of reflection, fasting, and prayer leading up to Easter. Each year generous Scots up and down the country give up a favourite treat such as coffee, chocolate, wine or crisps during Lent and put the money they save into a SCIAF WEE BOX.
Supporters also hold fundraising events in their schools and parishes and take on personal challenges to raise money. They then donate whatever they raise at Easter to provide a hand-up to vulnerable communities worldwide, struggling to survive due to hunger, poverty, conflict and the climate emergency.
This year, SCIAF’s appeal focusses on emergency relief and peace-building projects in Chocó, the poorest – and most violent - part of Colombia.
Ms Adamson said:
“SCIAF’s international work supports development projects in some of the most deprived part of the world.
“At a time when global politics feels increasingly charged and inward looking, it is incredibly important that Scotland maintains an outward looking approach.
“There are international aid projects that are doing critical work to support people in extreme poverty.
“Scots support the WEE BOX appeal every year as part of lent and I am encouraging my constituents in Motherwell and Wishaw to get involved in any way they can.
“My thanks, as always, go to the dedicated SCIAF team for their efforts in support of a more compassionate international community.”
Lorraine Currie, SCIAF’s Chief Executive said: “It’s so nice to see our politicians putting aside their differences to support our work and a better world. At SCIAF, we support people of all faiths and none, and believe that no one should be left behind. And that’s what’s been driving us for the last 60 years.
“I want to thank everyone who helped us be there for our poorest sisters and brothers over the years.
“Please give what you can to the SCIAF appeal this year. Even a small donation makes a huge difference. With your support, a better world is possible.”
