MOTHERWELL AND WISHAW MSP HAILS LIFE-CHANGING SNP POLICY
Clare Adamson MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw has said the SNP action to keep University tuition free has been life changing for students.
New figures show that 7,590 students from North Lanarkshire studied at University without paying tuition fees in 2023/24.
The figures, which are the newest on record, show the difference the flagship SNP policy of free tuition is making for young people in Motherwell and Wishaw.
Under Labour, students in England and Wales now pay £9,535 a year for tuition fees – which would be a total sum of £38,140 for Scottish students over the four-year period of a Scottish University course.
Ms Adamson said:
“The SNP’s free tuition policy has been the difference between some young people going to University.
“It is fantastic to see kids from North Lanarkshire benefitting from this investment in Scotland’s future.
“This policy has been life changing for thousands of Scots and has saved student from paying the enormous tuition fees that students in England and Wales are saddled with.
“Labour had previously pledged to follow the SNP’s lead and scrap tuition fees in England – but have instead hiked fees for students to nearly £10,000 a year.
“University won’t be the right fit for everyone. Particularly on Apprenticeship Week, it is right to point out the merits of learning on the job and building your skills through fantastic apprenticeship programmes.
“But the point is that it should be a choice, not an imposition due to finances. Young people should be empowered to seize every opportunity that comes to them.
“Under the SNP Scottish Government, there are record numbers of Scottish students getting a place at our Universities and a rise in students from more deprived backgrounds.
“By investing in students, we are building skills for the future and realising the potential of thousands of Scots who might not have had the chance otherwise.”
“The SNP moved to abolish tuition fees in Scotland because higher education should be about the chance to learn and not the ability to pay.
