MOTHERWELL & WISHAW MSP TAKES THE HELM OF COMMITTEE OVERSEEING NEW BENEFITS REGIME
SNP MSP for Motherwell & Wishaw Clare Adamson was this week elected as the new convenor of the Social Security Committee at the Scottish Parliament. Adamson replaced Sandra White on the committee who moved to the Scottish Parliamentary Corporate Body.
The committee is currently overseeing the Social Security (Scotland) Bill which sees a number of social security benefits currently administered at Westminster level being devolved to the Scottish Parliament. 11 new benefits will now be delivered by the Scottish Parliament, including Disability Living Allowance, Winter Fuel Payment and Carer’s Allowance.
The new powers will impact more than 1.4 million people in Scotland and lead to expenditure of £2.9 billion per year, representing one of the biggest transfers of powers since devolution.
Commenting, SNP MSP Clare Adamson said:
“I am delighted to have joined the Social Security Committee – and it is a real privilege to be elected as Convenor”.
“I would firstly like to record my thanks to the previous Convenor, Sandra White MSP, for her excellent work and wish her all the best in her new duties”.
“This is a vital time for social security in Scotland and we are overseeing the largest devolution of benefits since the establishment of the Scottish Parliament.
“I recently hosted an open event at my office to ask for views of my constituents ahead of devolution of the new benefits – that day has stuck with me ever since and those concerns will be at the forefront of my mind when undertaking my new role”.
