SNP MSP for Motherwell and Wishaw Clare Adamson today marked Universal Children’s Day with Bernardo’s staff at their store on Wishaw Main Street.

Ms Adamson visited the shop to find out how the Bernardo’s shops help the charity’s children’s services in the local area, and how that benefits children, young people and the local community.

Universal Children’s Day, which takes place on 20 November, was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1954 to be a day of understanding between children and to promote children’s welfare and children’s rights.

Commenting, Ms Adamson said:

‘It was a pleasure to meet with the amazing Bernardo’s staff to mark Universal Children’s Day again, this time in their Wishaw shop.

I was pleased to hear staff describe the support which they receive from the people of Motherwell & Wishaw who regularly donate their time and belongings to the charity. I was also extremely impressed with the development of shop volunteers, with one having recently secured a placement in a nursery following a successful period volunteering with Barnardo’s.

Money raised by the Wishaw store assists Barnardo’s deliver their community based services across Scotland including fostering and adoption services and support; helping children break free from sexual exploitation; supporting young carers; helping young people in to employment and helping children living in poverty.

Universal Children’s Day provides a vital opportunity to highlight the wonderful work carried out by Barnardo’s and other children’s charities’
